Dr. Smith grew up in Traverse City, MI. After serving as a US Navy Corpsman for a decade, he made the decision to pursue a career in dentistry and received his doctorate from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry.
We asked Dr. Smith a few questions so you can get to know him a little better!

What led you to seek a career in dentistry?

“I have always been curious and loved building—playing Legos, solving puzzles, and creating gourmet recipes. Through dentistry, I get to combine my creativity, attention to detail, and years of experience in medicine to heal and care for patients in a truly unique way, helping patients develop overall health and well-being while simultaneously improving self-confidence.”

Tell us about your family?

“Blessed with the profound joy and privilege of raising My Three Sons, all exquisitely unique children – an incredibly smart, talented, and very fast (cross country and track) high-schooler, an adventurous, joyful, and precocious toddler, and a very handsome, snuggly, baby boy.”

If time and money was not an issue, what hobby or activity would you love to get into?

“Carpentry & fine wood-working.”

What is your favorite part about working with patients?

“Developing relationships and helping patients reach their oral health goals is great, but even better is seeing the joyful reactions of patients after dental work is completed.”

If you could be an Olympic athlete, in what sport would you compete?

“Triathlon”

  • Dr. Jeffrey P. Okeson | He has been a full time faculty member at the University of Kentucky for 45 years. He is recognized worldwide as an authority in the field of TMD and orofacial pain, lecturing in every state in the USA and 59 different foreign countries. His textbooks have been translated into eleven different foreign languages and have become a standard for teaching throughout the world. His peers have called him the “World Ambassador for Orofacial pain”. He is a highly sought after speaker and has given more than 1300 invited lectures throughout the world. He has received numerous awards, honors and recognitions for his outstanding teaching and educational abilities.

How do you treat yourself after a long day of work?

“I usually hustle home to make dinner, eat with the family, and enjoy bath-time and bedtime with the little ones – reading several books (Elliott normally won’t settle for less than five). I also have a lot of fun helping my highschooler with homework because it gives me a chance to relearn math while spending quality time with my oldest son. I typically end my night with an early bedtime and reading, usually fantasy/fiction or good devotional.”

What is your typical go-to lunch while on a workday?

“Carrots and hummus with a nutritional shake and kombucha tea or coffee.”

What is your favorite type of treatment to do?

“I would have to say either Invisalign or Root Canal Therapy!”

If you could have someone narrate your life, who would you want it to be and why?

“Rowan Atkinson, because he has a very unique voice and cadence to his speech. He is also one of my and my son’s favorite comedians.”

What do you like to do on rainy days?

“Rainy days hold a special place in my heart, as they give me an opportunity to indulge in my favorite pastimes such as settling down with a good book, getting lost in a challenging puzzle, unwinding with my family over board or card games or simply enjoying a movie.”

“Tintagel Castle North Cornwall, England”

  • Flew in Fat Albert, the Blue Angels’ C-130, during the Naval Air Station Oceana Air Show in 2008
